Mill Levy
A mill levy is a property tax rate used by local governments and special districts in Colorado to fund their operations and debt payments.
One mill equals one dollar of tax for every one thousand dollars of assessed property value.
To calculate your tax from a single district, multiply your property's assessed value by the mill levy and divide by 1,000.
For example, if your home has an assessed value of $35,000 and the district mill levy is 50 mills, your annual tax to that district would be $1,750.
Most Colorado homeowners pay mill levies to multiple overlapping taxing entities including their county, city, school district, and any special districts, so your total mill levy is the sum of all individual levies.
Metro districts in particular can carry mill levies ranging from 30 to over 80 mills, which can significantly increase your annual property tax burden.
